Bathurst Island Lodge is a brand new and bigger lodge has been rebuilt on the old “Barra Base Lodge” site which closed down to sport fishing guests back in 1998.
The lodge is positioned on the water’s edge with sweeping views over Port Hurd and the Timor Sea.
Barra Base was constructed 30 years ago as Australia’s first ever guided Barramundi sportfishing lodge. Since its closure about 15 years ago it has been utilised by the Tiwi Islanders for non-fishing purposes.
The original Barra Base Lodge main building, which oozes charm and fishing ambiance, has been fully restored plus new structures added. Bathurst Island Lodge will accommodate a maximum of 12 guests with comfortable air-conditioned single and twin share accommodation, chef prepared meals plus all the usual remote creature comforts our clients today hope to expect.
Fishing at Bathurst Island Lodge
The Lodge will provide its guests with a high quality catch and release fishing adventure situated in a spectacular and pristine wilderness environment. Dominant fish species will be barramundi, mangrove jacks, threadfin salmon, blue salmon, golden snapper, black jewfish, queenfish, many species of trevally including giant trevally. spanish mackeral plus at least 40 other species of quality river, creek and reef fish.
Transfers between Darwin and the Tiwi Islands are by private charter flights with your option to arrive early morning(7.30am flight ex Darwin) or late afternoon(4.30pm flight ex Darwin).
Similarly, departure can be after your last days fishing(5.30pm flight ex Bathurst Island) or after breakfast the following morning(9am flight ex Bathurst Island).
Flying time from Darwin is approximately 40 minutes to Bathurst Island Lodge’s personal air strip.
Please note that a 10kg per person luggage restriction applies.
Boats and Motors
The Lodge will operate 4 x 6.4m new alloy fishing vessels fitted with 150hp 4-stroke motors and will employ 8 staff. Lodge guests will enjoy exclusive fishing access to the entire west coast of Bathurst Island. This substantial area consists of several major river systems plus countless creeks, inlets and reef fishing opportunities. Bathurst Island Lodge is extremely remote and isolated with the only form of access being by light aircraft, followed by boat transfer…or by helicopter from Darwin.
